Presenting your Home
In the same way that you wouldn’t expect to buy something from a shop that has damaged packaging - unless you can get a discount - people who look at your home will be unlikely to pay its full potential price if no effort has been made to present it to them properly.
The exception to this is any character property that lends itself to restoration. These homes, like fine old antiques, are usually best left alone rather than spending on "modernisation" that might do more damage than good. There’s almost nothing worse than a beamed Tudor cottage with lime green walls! Pine cladding to oak beams should be made a criminal offence!
Presentation is the secret to successful selling – thought given in advance even to the colour of your cushions can help create an ambience that is seductive and appealing. Conversely, piles of old newspapers in a 60’s semi, or clothes "hung" on the floor, or a garden with brambles up to the window can conspire to create a home that will be almost impossible to sell at its full potential price.
Many people need help. They haven’t the time or the skill to know how to get the best for their home. House doctors are a relatively new import to the UK, so they are often difficult to find. However most estate agents will know of someone who has the necessary skills and the ability to make your home more marketable. People who fit out show-houses are particularly clever at squeezing the last ounce of appeal out of a few square yards of living space, for a relatively small expenditure.
