TODAY'S WOKING/WEST BYFLEET AND AROUND
Maybury and Sheerwater
Park Road and Pembroke Road, for example, have some of the finest residences in the Borough. These are mostly substantial homes in leafy roads and are highly prized, particularly by train commuters, because most of them lie within about a 10-minute walk of the station. On the other side of Maybury Hill the homes here are in complete contrast and are generally smaller terraced and semi-detached cottages and houses. This area has an interesting modern history. It has become the centre of the Moslem community, due mainly to the presence of the Shah Jehan Mosque, the oldest in Britain and probably in Europe. Sheerwater was developed in 1948 by London County Council as part of a programme to overcome the acute shortage of housing land in the capital. Many of the properties here are now privately owned. The estate has nearly 1,300 homes, local shops, churches, schools for all ages - including Bishop David Brown Secondary School, pubs and sports/leisure facilities - including Woking Athletic Club's.
